| 1998: An Important Year for Youth
Regional and Global Youth Meetings Planned |
| 1998 will be an important year for youth in the United Nations. Both at the regional and global levels, major gatherings of both governments and NGOs are being planned. The two regional events being organized by ESCAP will serve as inputs for the World Conference of Ministers of Youth and the World Youth Forum.
The agenda of the meeting will focus on key HRD issues for youth, including health, education, youth participation, and employment. The meeting will also discuss issues relating to youth and communications as well as formulate a regional position for the third session of the World Youth Forum to be held in Lisbon in August. ESCAP will also be convening the Second Asia-Pacific Intergovernmental Meeting on HRD for Youth in Bangkok from 1 to 5 June 1998. This meeting will be the only regional intergovernmental meeting for Asia and the Pacific to prepare for the World Conference of Ministers of Youth, to be held in Lisbon in August 1998. If your organization is interested in any of these regional events, contact ESCAP. For more information on the global meetings, visit the United Nations Website for Youth, or write to Mr William D. Angel, Officer-in-Charge, United Nations Youth Unit, New York, N.Y. 10017, USA. Background documentation for the global meetings can also be found on the Internet. Simply follow the “documents” link on the main page of the United Nations. Documents A/52/60, A/52/80, E/1997/103 and E/1997/104 are recommended. We will keep you informed of further developments.
