Learning to Manage Literacy Programmes in South Asia
As one of ESCAP's literacy projects, "Government-NGO cooperation to promote
HRD for women in South Asia through post-literacy programme development"
enters its third and final year, we take time to review the project, as well
as gearing up for future activities in the field of literacy promotion.
Raising Literacy, Reducing Poverty in China
The Government of China has made many efforts to eradicate poverty in the
country over the past decades. These efforts have met with considerable success.
The population under the official poverty line has been reduced from 250 million
in 1978 to approximately 50 million in 1998. ESCAP organized a workshop last
November to take stock.
Thailand: "Rurals" Meet "Urbans"
In Thailand, urban young law students are teaching young rurals
about their legal rights. By doing that they not only give a helping
hand to rural youth, but also to themselves.
Post-Literacy Programmes in South Asia
Female literacy rates in Bangladesh, India, Nepal and Pakistan are about
half of those recorded for males. ESCAP has developed a project to formulate
effective post-literacy programmes for women in these four countries.
Literacy Training in South-East Asia and the
Pacific
Not only in South Asia, but also some other countries in the region
continue to face difficulties in addressing the high incidence of illiteracy,
especially among women. Those countries include Cambodia, Lao PDR in
South-East Asia, and in the Pacific, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands
and Vanuatu.
